If you’ve enjoyed the festive season as much as I have, then you may find that you’re feeling a wee bit sluggish as the new year dawns. This, along with the fear that the next winter bug to strike is just around the corner, is enough to make you want to impose a strict and prolonged period of detox and healthy living.
Whether you are committed to kick-starting 2017 with a new health regime or are just looking for a few simple ways to give your vitality a boost, you may be interested to learn about the benefits of two therapies - lymphatic drainage massage and dry skin brushing – that are now available at Amulet Therapy as part of the new detox massage launching in January. The following post takes a closer look at Lymphatic Drainage and its benefits. It will be followed, tomorrow, by another post regarding the benefits of dry skin brushing.

The Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system plays a major role in the body’s immune system, it helps to rid the body of toxins and produces the white blood cells that fight infection. It involves a network of vessels that transports lymph fluid around the body. This fluid collects waste products, fatty acids, bacteria and viruses from the body’s tissues and transports it to the lymph nodes to be filtered and eventually removed from the body.
During bouts of illness, prolonged exposure to pollutants or following periods of overindulgence the body’s tissues become overloaded with toxins. The excess causes fluid to build up and blockages to occur, making it difficult for the body to expel the toxic waste. This can lead to a feeling of sluggishness and make us more prone to illness. Often the unexplained aches, pains, and fatigue we experience are a result of a compromised lymph system. It also can be a factor in the inability to lose weight and shift stubborn areas of fat.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Developed in the 1930s, lymphatic drainage is a special massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to clear blockages, allowing the lymph to flow freely, thereby encouraging the system to perform at an optimum level.
Unlike the circulatory system which uses the heart to pump the blood around the body, the lymphatic system has to rely on movement from the surrounding muscles to force the fluid through the lymph vessels. The pressure created by massage manipulates the muscles in the same manner and helps to influence the movement of lymph fluid.
Using a very delicate pressure combined with a slight pumping movement, in the direction of the lymph nodes, a vacuum is created in the lymph vessels. As the lymph fluid rushes to fill the vacuum, blockages are flushed through the vessel eventually clearing the path. Once blockages are cleared the lymphatic system is able to efficiently remove toxins, waste and bacteria from the body and deliver the infection-fighting white blood cells to where they are needed.
As the optimum functioning of the lymphatic system is restored, fatigue will be overcome and energy levels will soar, aches and pains will lessen, frequency and severity of headaches and migraines will be reduced and you may find it easier to lose weight. The immune system will also be strengthened considerably, making you less susceptible to illness and infections.
Unlike deep tissue massage, lymphatic drainage can be used to treat swollen areas and is therefore is very effective when treating sport’s injuries, reducing scar tissue, and minimising pain associated with rheumatism and broken bones. Once the initial inflammation caused by injury has died down lymphatic drainage can be used to relieve oedema, remove damaged cells and deliver nourishment to assist with the development of new tissue.
Due to its gentle approach lymphatic drainage is a very safe therapy, however there are some instances in which this type massage should be avoided. The most severe cases involve those with heart problems, thrombosis, malignant tumours or acute inflammation caused by infection. People with cancer, diabetes, thyroid problems, epilepsy and asthma should consult their doctor before having a lymphatic drainage massage due to its powerful effect of the immune system.
In the most part this therapy is a wonderful way to increase the strength of the body’s immunity. It is has had a lot of success in treating those recovering from cancer by reducing the painful lymphedema that can occur as a result of surgery and removal of lymph nodes and therefore may be a worthwhile therapy to consider along with your doctor's supervision.
Following a lymphatic drainage massage you can expect to feel less congested and any puffiness on the face, especially around the eyes, will be reduced. With the boost to your metabolism you may notice a positive change in your digestion and quality of sleep, and you will enjoy a sense of renewed energy and vitality. What’s more as the immune system begins to strengthen you will be able to ward off further illness and infection. Overall the body is left feeling youthful, healthy and balanced.
